Nintendo is showing the real power of their recent mobile app, Nintendo Today, by dropping an announcement trailer for the previously unknown adventure game Splatoon Raiders. And, for those who know the game series, it’s truly off the hook.
If you’re familiar with the Splatoon franchise, you know the premise. It’s a competitive arena shooter where the winners are whoever gets the most of their colored ink onto the ground. Since the days of the Nintendo Wii U, Splatoon has been a staple of Nintendo consoles and has generally stuck to its (ink-filled) guns on how to play the game.

Splatoon Raiders seems to take that concept to a whole different level. You see, in Splatoon games, there’s always a linear, single-player, adventure storyline as well that often delves into more worldbuilding and tons of NPC enemies. The new spinoff, Splatoon Raiders, seems to be a more standalone version of that concept and will likely expand on how the game franchise and universe both work.
Out of the over-five-minute trailer, only around one minute of it was dedicated to teasing Splatoon Raiders. The rest of it was focused on what is now considered a “last generation game”, Splatoon 3, with a new, free update coming this week on June 12th.
This update includes the “Splatlands collection”, which has new weapons for the Barazushi and Emberz brands. You’ll be able to pick up 30 new weapon kits with this update.
Additionally, a stage from the first Splatoon game on the Wii U, Urchin Underpass, is getting added to the stage rotation. As a fan of the original game, I’m always excited to see a familiar stage.
According to the press release, more changes were made, including all weapon Freshness caps being raised, new in-game Badges, and a new stat being added for Anarchy Battle (Series) called Series Weapon Power. According to Nintendo, “it will track a player’s effectiveness per weapon based on their win/loss ratio in battles – and will then match them with players of a similar power. This makes it possible for players to try new weapons without being disadvantaged and push the limits (of) their favorite weapons.”
But, wait, that’s not all! Just like with a lot of Nintendo Switch games this past week, this update is also the update that brings Splatoon 3 to the Nintendo Switch 2 with smoother graphics and more detailed visuals on maps. They also confirmed that this will allow players on both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 to play together.
While today’s teaser was short, we’ll likely (hopefully) get a full Nintendo Direct with more information about Splatoon Raiders in the near future. If you didn’t get the update straight from Nintendo Today on mobile, you can watch the entire 5-minute presentation on YouTube.
If you are into third-person adventure and shooters, Fortnite also came to the Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day. Check out the news and find out how to use the mouse controls on your Switch 2 for it!
