Quick Verdict: GUNNAR did pretty well with the Borderlands 4, Ripper gaming glasses, offering a vibrant style that mimics the mask of a Psycho from the franchise. While fans of the series will love wearing these since they’re comfortable to wear, it feels a decade and a half too late.

I’ve been a Borderlands fan since the early days of the franchise – fighting psychos, opening vaults, saving angels, having epic finger gun fights, you name it. As a huge fan of the franchise, it’s always nice to see merch and gear coming from unique places, which is why we’re going to talk about GUNNAR today with their Borderlands 4, Ripper glasses.

Speaking of the psychos from Borderlands, these glasses are meant to invoke the look and feel of being the bad guys who adorn the box art of every mainline Borderlands game, the psychos.

What’s in the box?

As this is among the under $100 licensed models from GUNNAR, the Borderlands 4, Ripper doesn’t offer the usual hardshell case that higher-priced frames offer. But, the microfiber cloth and microfiber carry pouch are included, and they look really nice.

Licensed GUNNAR frames tend to have some art in most cases and this set is no different. The background is a nice blue that makes the eggshell white and orange of the psycho pop nicely on both items on one side, with the GUNNAR and Borderlands logos on the reverse. All in all, GUNNAR followed their formula and it looks nice.

Tech in the Specs (or, Holding a Lens Up to These Glasses)

As always, the lenses on GUNNAR glasses are top-notch. When sitting next to any other GUNNAR frame, the one thing you’re going to notice is that GUNNAR is a lens company first and foremost, and the frames themselves are just the vehicle for them (Catch a ride!).

With that said, the GUNNAR Borderlands 4, Ripper glasses come standard with the 65 Amber lens coating, which does the whole blue-blocker thing that you’d come to expect from gaming or computer glasses, with a bit of a yellow tinge. But, it goes well beyond that.

You’re also getting anti-reflective, anti-smear, and water-resistant lenses that also give 100% UV protection. As someone who doesn’t need glasses to see, I wear them to help with wind shear as well.

The glasses themselves look great, knowing that some licensed GUNNAR glasses fall short on aesthetics that make sense to the brand or feel they’re going for.

Borderlands, as a brand and IP, is meant to be loud and obnoxious. The jokes and action are in your face (in this case, literally), and it’s always worn its weirdness and vibrancy on its sleeve. GUNNAR’s glasses embody that mission with bright colors and the cel-shaded look that fans of the franchise have come to expect.

They look like you’re wearing a slice of a psycho’s mask from the games, and they don’t try to hide the inspiration, which gives them extra points in my book for this.

Wearing the GUNNAR Borderlands 4, Ripper Glasses

The Borderlands 4, Ripper gaming glasses are very well adjusted to their price range. The materials used are reflected in this thought process, being a polymer meant to move.

Wearing them, the hinges aren’t the flexible kind that I wish every pair of glasses had, but the polymer frame lends itself to moving and molding to various head shapes. As someone with a large head, it helps when they do this for people like me, as some GUNNAR frames can be a tad rigid and can be uncomfortable.

All in all, I don’t have any real qualms with the build of the glasses, especially for the price point. Even though I know it’s not going to, the material can feel like I’m going to bend it too much and break.

My main concern is that this look feels like it’s outdated, like it was prime for 2012, at the height of Borderlands 2, not in 2025 for Borderlands 4. These are glasses that would have fit more into that era of fashion, in my opinion, when people would have better understood what you were wearing at that time.

Final Verdict

Honestly, the Borderlands 4, Ripper gaming glasses are fantastic in a lot of ways, and I don’t have a lot of serious problems with them. If you’re looking to be flamboyant with your look and are a big fan of Borderlands, these work fantastically.

They come in both the 65 Amber (that I noted above), but the Sunglasses version looks like they’d be great on-the-go sunglasses that bring all of the attention to your face.
